Education for a Lifetime: Forming Minds, Shaping Futures at Christendom College

Summary

Christendom’s “Education for a Lifetime” program shows graduates how to use their liberal arts education to build a meaningful life.

I’ve worked at Christendom College for 25 years—a long time by any measure, but especially at a young institution now approaching its 48th anniversary. One of the great privileges of this time has been getting to know nearly every alum who has walked across our stage.

I’ve witnessed firsthand how a Christendom education has shaped lives, opened doors, and prepared graduates not just for careers—but for their vocational calling.

Where Christendom Excels

There’s a common misconception that only a degree tied to a specific career path leads to success. But that’s increasingly outdated. Today’s employers are looking for something more enduring: critical thinking, clear communication, and problem-solving. In fact, 93% of them say these “soft skills” matter more than a candidate’s major.

That’s where Christendom excels. Our students don’t choose Christendom for ease or shortcuts. They come for a challenge—for deep learning, an authentically Catholic culture, and a transformative experience.

Education for a lifetime

A cornerstone of this formation is our unique required, four-year career development program—aptly titled “Education for a Lifetime.”

Unlike most colleges, where career services are optional or last-minute, our one-of-a-kind program is integrated into the curriculum, ensuring every student graduates with the tools to thrive in the workplace. From résumé writing and interview skills to job search strategy and salary negotiation, students build a strong foundation—one step at a time, every year.

This preparation matters more than ever. Many Gen Z graduates are entering the workforce with enthusiasm but little readiness:

  • 38% of employers say they hesitate to hire them
  • 58% feel they’re not prepared for the real world
  • Some even show up to interviews with their parents

Our graduates, including those who went to Seton and then Christendom, defy that trend. They’re confident, capable, and career-ready. With over 30 hours of structured, in-class career formation, they stand out in a competitive world—not just for what they know, but for who they are.

These Four Years are a Gift

From the moment students arrive at Christendom College, they are reminded that these four years are a gift—an opportunity not just to earn a degree, but to prepare for a lifetime of purpose. If our mission to “restore all things in Christ” is to be realized, then each student must keep their feet firmly planted in the rich Catholic culture we offer, with their eyes fixed on the ultimate goal—living a life of faithful impact in the world beyond graduation.

That’s why we created this distinctive “Education for a Lifetime” program, which weaves career and vocational preparation directly into the student experience through for-credit courses. These courses help students build practical skills, prepare professional résumés, explore internships, meet recruiters, and discern their calling with intentionality and support.

And the results? They’re remarkable:

  • Over 98% of our recent graduates found employment or enrolled in graduate school within six months of finishing their degrees.
  • Over 97% say their investment in a Christendom education was absolutely worth it.
  • Over 90% believe they were well prepared to succeed, both professionally and personally.

Historically, college has been about more than job training—it’s about the formation of the whole person. At Christendom, that tradition is alive and well. We don’t just offer classes; we cultivate thinkers, communicators, leaders, and disciples.

Our students study philosophy, literature, classics, theology, political science, history, math, and the natural sciences—not to memorize facts, but to grow in wisdom and virtue. These disciplines shape minds and hearts to meet the challenges of the modern world with confidence and clarity.

Still, we understand that students also need to find jobs and answer their personal vocational calls. That’s why we’ve structured the career development side of Christendom so uniquely—and so successfully.

Our alumni are everywhere: in medicine, law, education, business, the trades, religious life, and the home. They are doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, entrepreneurs, architects, tradesmen, priests, religious, and many stay-at-home moms—the hardest and greatest job of them all. And what they share in common is this: their liberal arts education gave them the tools, and the “Education for a Lifetime” program showed them how to use those tools to build a meaningful life.

Christendom doesn’t just prepare students for a job. It prepares them for life—and for eternity.
