Homeschooling has given our family something we did not even realize we were missing: the opportunity to experience learning together.In January, my daughter and I began our first year of homeschooling through Seton Home Study School. Until then, she had attended a small public school in our town with caring teachers and close-knit classes. But at only six years old, she was already bringing home difficult questions about broken families, unkindness, and a world that often seemed confusing to her young heart.
My husband and I realized that while we could not shield our children from every hardship, we could be more intentional about how they encountered the world—and how faith helped them understand it. That realization led us to homeschooling.
Like many first-time homeschooling parents, I was nervous in the beginning. I wondered whether I was patient enough, organized enough, or capable of teaching my own child well.
What I quickly discovered, though, is that homeschooling is not about perfection. It is about presence.
Around the Kitchen Table
Our classroom looks nothing like a traditional school setting. Most days, lessons happen around the kitchen table. Sometimes they spill onto the living room floor, and on warm afternoons we move outside entirely.
My daughter is in first grade, and our home is full of little life and activity. She has two younger brothers, and we recently welcomed another baby girl into our family. Homeschooling with several small children nearby is not always quiet or perfectly organized.
Yet somehow, that has become part of its beauty.
When my daughter opens her books, her younger siblings often gather around her out of curiosity. They look at pictures, ask questions, and sometimes try to imitate her lessons with their own crayons and notebooks. What began as education for one child has slowly become a shared family experience.
Homeschooling has also given us the flexibility that fits our daughter’s personality. She is energetic and social, and instead of spending long hours at a desk, she can balance focused learning with time to play, explore, and simply be a child.
Learning Through Daily Life
One of the greatest surprises of homeschooling has been realizing how naturally learning fits into everyday life.
Science happens while observing insects and flowers outside. Math appears while measuring ingredients in the kitchen. Reading takes place curled up on the couch with a blanket and a stack of books.
The line between “school” and “life” has begun to disappear.
Instead of education feeling confined to certain hours of the day, learning now unfolds naturally throughout our home.
Of course, not every day is easy. There are unfinished lessons, distracted mornings, and moments when patience wears thin. But there are also quiet joys that might otherwise be missed: spontaneous questions, meaningful conversations, and little moments of growth that happen right in the middle of ordinary family life.
Faith at the Center
The greatest blessing of homeschooling has been the way it has strengthened our family’s faith.
Because of the flexibility homeschooling provides, we can pray together more often and attend daily Mass when possible. Faith is no longer something squeezed into the evening after a rushed day. It has become part of the rhythm of our home.
One of my favorite moments happens after Mass, when my daughter excitedly points out something she recognizes from her religion lessons. Sometimes she asks thoughtful questions about the readings or the priest’s homily. Seeing her connect what she is learning with the life of the Church is incredibly beautiful.
Faith, for her, is becoming more than something found in a textbook. It is becoming something lived.
As a first-year homeschooling parent, I am still learning right alongside my daughter. But I have already come to see that homeschooling is about far more than academics. It is about forming a home where faith, curiosity, and family life grow together.
