Staff Profile: Nicholas Tamas – Head of High School Theology

Summary

I genuinely enjoy answering counseling questions and helping to remove obstacles and stumbling blocks, smoothing the road for families as best as I can.

I came to Seton Home Study School after working as a teacher in both public and private schools. I had decided to move from the classroom to curriculum development.

While I miss teaching, my main goal as a teacher was to help parents provide their children with an education. Here at Seton, I can work toward this same goal, but in a different way. This is less a career change and more a shift in the kind of relationship I have with the families I assist.

A little about myself, I moved to Front Royal, VA, when I was 9 years old, and have lived in the area ever since. I spend most of my time reading, working outside (I live deep in the woods, so there is a lot of manual labor in maintaining the property: tree-felling, wood splitting, gardening, etc.), and helping my mom raise my niece. I am a rather private and reserved person, so the woods are the best place for me.

I am a nature photographer. I have worked professionally, but I have never pursued it as a business. It is more of a hobby. I also enjoy board games, storytelling, writing, and hiking.

My Homeschooling Experience

I was homeschooled through the Seton program and began community college classes near the end of high school. Then on to Catholic International University for my Bachelor’s in Theology. I have been studying Theology independently for over a decade. I have also worked with homeschooling families as a private tutor.

I have experienced firsthand the highs and lows of homeschooling from kindergarten through high school, and I know the difficulties it entails well. One of my goals is to help remove these difficulties, these stumbling blocks, and smooth the road for families as best as I can manage.

Grasp Reality as God Made it.

Education is not simply knowing the right information at the right time, but the development of our minds to grasp reality as God made it. Each aspect of a course needs to be fashioned to foster this development and work harmoniously with the others to do so.

The ideal is not that students remember everything taught in the courses, but that they learn to pursue learning independently, reflect on their beliefs, and articulate their thoughts clearly.

My Work at Seton Home Study

As the Head of High School Theology, I grade tests, supervise a team of graders, answer counseling questions, and revise the curriculum. No course is perfect. There will always be room for improvement.

My job is to help revise the Theology courses to properly foster what I mentioned about education. When there are questions about the material, I am available to answer them.

Still a Teacher at Heart

I genuinely enjoy answering counseling questions. I am still a teacher at heart, so being able to interact with the students and help them learn is my favorite part of the day.
