Staff Series: Josephine Maresca – Head of High School Science

Summary

The most enjoyable part of my work is answering students’ and families’ questions and finding ways to improve our Seton science courses.

I have known Seton since 2006, having completed the curriculum as an enrolled student from 5th grade through high school. In 2023, after moving to Front Royal, I came to know Seton in a different way.

Starting out as an employee in the shipping department, I directly participated in the work that makes Seton a tangible reality for many families. Then, in December 2025, I was hired for my current position in the science department.

The Spark

Since I was a child, I have had a fascination with animals and a sensitivity to the natural world. This initial spark is what eventually led me to study Biology in college. I earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Seton Hall University in 2018, along with minors in environmental science and interactive design multimedia. After that, I gained several years of experience as a tutor and classroom teacher in various math and science subjects.

Now, as Head of High School & Junior High Science, my work is versatile and connects me to different departments at Seton. I work in counseling, grading, and curriculum development.

The most enjoyable part of my work is answering questions from students and families and, at the same time, finding ways to improve our science courses, with the goals of communicating the Catholic faith through these subjects and making them enjoyable to learn.

La Famiglia

A little bit about my family… we are a family of eight, and I am the second oldest of six siblings. We were living in Italy back when my parents looked online for a Catholic homeschooling program and decided to enroll us in Seton.

Now in Front Royal, Virginia, my family and I enjoy living and working together. Our aspirations to expand our collective self-sufficiency skills in the home and garden keep us quite busy. As of now, we share our homestead with a dog, cats, chickens, two fish, a turtle, and many plants.

Allow me to offer two pieces of advice that stem from my own Seton homeschooling experience. First, do not be afraid to challenge yourself – academically or otherwise – and never stop learning. Let your homeschooling experience foster in you a flourishing of the mind and a love of learning that will be with you your whole life, because that’s the exciting part about learning – it doesn’t stop at graduation.

Second, and more important, cherish and build your family life, with a love for Jesus Our Lord at the center. Homeschooling offers a unique opportunity to strengthen family bonding, which ultimately strengthens society and the Church.

Let your homeschooling experience be a blessing to your family, allowing you to grow in knowledge, wisdom, and love.
