In the Schoolroom: Roses for St. Thérèse

Summary

This delicious dessert recipe celebrates St.Therese’s feast and her promise that after her death, she would “let fall a shower of roses.”

The “Little Way” of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux is a simple path to holiness that lends itself easily to small children who are just learning how to be virtuous.

It teaches that great love can be found in small acts, and that every moment—no matter how ordinary—can be offered to God. Rather than seeking heroic deeds, Saint Thérèse believed in doing small things with great love, trusting entirely in God’s mercy and grace. She wrote, “What matters in life is not great deeds, but great love.”

The Little Way

Thérèse was a Carmelite nun who died at the age of 24, yet her spiritual wisdom has guided countless souls. She saw herself as a little flower in God’s garden, unremarkable in the eyes of the world, but precious to Him.

Her “Little Way” is especially meaningful for those who feel they cannot do big things, offering hope that even daily chores, quiet prayers, and hidden sacrifices can become powerful offerings when united with love for God.

Small children are particularly suited to the “Little Way.” Helping mom by setting the table, picking up their toys, or wiping the counter are all small acts that, when offered up to God, become holy.

Shower with Roses

Before her death, she promised to continue helping others from heaven. She said, “After my death, I will let fall a shower of roses.” Many people around the world have reported receiving roses—literal or symbolic—after praying for her intercession, a sign of her loving presence and heavenly care.

Saint Thérèse died on September 30th, but we celebrate her feast on October 1st, as her first day in heaven. One way to celebrate would be to make apple pie roses for a festive fall dessert honoring this most beautiful little saint.
