We Found Our Homeschool Home with Seton

Summary

Faithfully Catholic, rigorous academics, while still being flexible and affordable, Seton had all the markers we were looking for.

We started our homeschooling journey in 2012 at Fort Meade, Maryland. Our oldest son, Robert, was entering the 6th grade. The public school system did not provide the environment we wanted as a Catholic family. We started looking for alternatives, and homeschooling seemed like the best way to go.

We found Seton Home Study School through research online and knew right away we had found our homeschool home. I read Dr. Mary Kay Clark’s book on homeschooling and knew that this was the way to help my children and our family.

Faithfully Catholic, rigorous academics, while still being flexible and affordable, Seton had all the markers we were looking for. An online community for moms and students was also a plus. Our sons quickly made friends that have lasted to this day.

Our Family Mission

Our family’s mission is to raise our children to be happy, healthy, humble, holy, and hardworking. Seton provided the opportunity to help us sanctify our daily life.

A typical homeschooling day in the Besel family begins with prayer and breakfast. Work starts right after breakfast. My teens head to their desks in the family office, and my youngest works where she feels the most comfortable. Usually, at her desk, but sometimes it’s the couch or dining room table. We break for lunch and chores, and then for time outside.

We also attend St. Benedict in The Pines Co-Op on Tuesdays and have piano and guitar lessons throughout the week. Days end around 4 pm with sports and after-school activities.

Greatest Benefit

The greatest benefit of homeschooling is the opportunity to create a flexible schedule. Having this flexibility means we can focus on specific subjects or non-related school activities while still planning our school day.

We can school anytime, anywhere! Another benefit has been learning alongside my children. I don’t teach them a subject; we discover it together, and more often, my children teach me with their fresh outlook and perspectives.

The greatest challenge on our homeschooling journey has been sticking to the schedule. We love the flexibility, but sometimes you have to focus in and that can be a challenge.

Our Catholic faith is part of our identity. We chose Seton Home Study School because of its Catholic identity. We participate in daily Mass, youth groups, and family activities at church and in the larger Catholic community in the United States.

Choose Seton!

Parents are the first educators of their children. You can do it! Ask God first and then move with confidence to educate your children. If you doubt, choose Seton!

Homeschooling has taught my children that they can do hard things. They are encouraged to do their best work each time and to learn from their mistakes. They don’t work just to pass; they work to understand and comprehend the subjects they are trying to master. My older boys help their younger sister and, in so doing, learn leadership and how to give solid direction. Leadership, understanding, and perseverance allow my children to bloom and grow to be their best version.

No Regrets

All seven of my children have homeschooled with Seton. My oldest, Bobby, married another Seton Grad and is now in the U.S. Coast Guard. My second, Alex, just became a warrant officer in the U.S. Navy and has a beautiful family.

My daughter, Mary Frances, is a high school art teacher in Atlanta, and Cecilia works for the Superior Court in Columbia County, Georgia. Bobby and Alex graduated from Seton, and my girls homeschooled for 6 years with Seton. My youngest three are all Seton students.

I have never regretted homeschooling. My children have received a great education, and so have I. The teacher always learns more. I am grateful for a curriculum like Seton provides to help parents educate their children while enriching their souls. School at home, school in the mountains, school on the beach. Just do it with Seton!
